Monica Drake is an American journalist involved in anti-transgender coverage at the New York Times. Drake is the first African-American woman to serve on the newsroom’s print masthead.
No transgender journalist has appeared on the New York Times masthead since its founding in 1851. Drake understands the importance of identity and representation, saying in 2020:
When I talk to journalism schools about identity, I say, āWho you are and your experience can be a superpower in journalism.ā I think itās really true. I see stories that other people donāt necessarily notice.
Drake was named to the masthead in 2018, during a sharp uptick in anti-transgender coverage in the paper as well as an ongoing lack of trans and gender-diverse representation in their newsroom.
Background
Monica C. Drake was born in 1972 and grew up in Yellow Springs, Ohio. She earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Yale University in 1994.
She joined the Times in 1998 as a copy editing intern. he has worked on the Culture and Travel sections and founded the Surfacing column about underrepresented subcultures like transgender people.
Drake married Times journalist Greg Winter in 2006.
