Environmental Progress vs. transgender people

Environmental Progress is an anti-transgender organization founded by Michael Shellenberger.

Background

Environmental Progress began as a hub for attacking progressive policy around energy, especially those that were critical of nuclear power. Pacific Gas & Electric executive Kristin Zaitz was a key figure in the organization during this time.

As Michael Shellenberger got more involved in anti-transgender extremism, it shifted its focus to attacking progressive policy around gender identity and expression.

In 2023 Shellenberger brought anti-transgender activist Melissa Chen onto the board and hired anti-trans researchers to attack WPATH, including “Mia Ashton” (aka Mia Hughes) and “Christina Buttons.” In 2024 they published the WPATH Files, a collection of internal communications by WPATH members, along with anti-trans editorializing.
