“Lauren Milovy” and Brianna Wu

“Lauren K. Milovy” aka “Lauren E. Milovy” (sometimes styled “Lauren MiLovy”) is listed as a co-author with conservative trans activist Brianna Wu on some creative projects in the early 2000s. Evidence strongly suggests that “Milovy” was a sockpuppet Wu created around 2003 and used into 2006.

  • “Milovy” and Wu were listed on Netdoor at the same address in Flowood, Mississippi
  • “Milovy” and Wu listed the same birthdate, July 6th, 1977
  • “Milovy” shares Wu’s intense interest in sorority girls and cheerleaders
  • “Milovy” claimed to be a journalist but takes umbrage at editorial changes / criticism in similar ways to Wu
  • “Milovy” and Wu have identical art styles
  • A 2001 online resume posted by Wu autoplayed a James Bond theme; a 1987 Bond film featured a villain named “Kara Milovy”
  • “Lauren K. Milovy” was listed as co-author of “The Minuete,” a 2003 Socially Unconscious radio drama proposal
  • The Election Eve website bio for “Milovy” listed the email lmilovy@electioneve.com and suggests “Milovy” and Wu were in a romantic relationship
  • In 2004, Wu solicited a model who could pose as “Milovy” for the inside photo jacket of the hardcover, claiming “Milovy” was “terribly camera shy”
  • “Milovy” wrote “I don’t have a male organ myself, but if I ever do it’s comforting to know there are a lot of people out there with options, just in case”

Background

In 1998, Wu discovered FictionMania, a website for transgender erotic fiction, and consumed its content for the next eight years. In an autobiography posted to FictionMania, Wu said, “I wasted many years that I could have been living as a girl by visiting that site.” Wu delayed starting medical transition until 2006.

Socially Unconscious Productions, LLC (SOCCON) was established on February 16, 1999, ceased all operations by March 2000, and was dissolved by Wu’s parents on August 26, 2002 after failing to receive any payments on $170,000 in loans. Wu continued writing drafts in the Socially Unconscious universe after the company failed.

A 2001 online resume posted by Wu autoplayed the James Bond disco-themed “Bond 77” by Marvin Hamlisch, featured in The Spy Who Loved Me. The 1987 film The Living Daylights features a character named “Kara Milovy,” Wu’s likely inspiration for the sockpuppet’s name.

Around 2003, Wu appears to have created the feminine sockpuppet “Lauren Milovy” as a co-author, then began posting online as “Milovy” as part of expressing a feminine identity prior to transition.

The Gadgeteer (2003–2004)

The Gadgeteer is a group blog founded in 1997. “Milovy” made several contributions in 2003 and 2004, including one that revealed “Milovy” and Wu had the same digital device. Wu wrote on IGN, “I used my Palm Tungsten C like it was part of my body,” and “Milovy” previously posted about owning a Tungsten C for a year.

“Milovy” also shares Wu’s intense interest in sorority girls and cheerleaders. On May 16, 2004, “lmilovy” noted that editors had altered a posted review, replacing the original text “like a drunken cheerleader into a frat house.” In a comment, “Milovy” wrote:

This was my original text
.

and in any case passes Julie’s legendary creak test like a drunken cheerleader into a frat house

I find all this highly amusing. 🙂 My best guess is that Julie had seen Revenge of the Nerds IV the night before on cable, and was keenly aware of the hijinks that can happen when actual drunken cheerleaders enter a frat house. Those hooligan Tri-lams. 🙂

Gadgeteer editor Julie Strietelmeier then responded, “Actually, I thought that passage was a little tasteless, so I edited it.”

“Milovy” then responded in part:

“I get a little uncomfortable when any editor changes my work, other than editing for format and clarity. In this case it could be argued it was for clarity, which is why I chose to see the whole thing as ironic. I mean that in the sense I honestly have no idea what offends people’s sensabilities nowadays. I don’t even blink at the self-loving bear skits on Conan. I bet if I blocked the words “hot asian” from my inbox, it would cut down dramatically on spam. I don’t have a male organ myself, but if I ever do it’s comforting to know there are a lot of people out there with options, just in case.” [emphasis added]

After others came to Strietelmeier’s defense, “Milovy” wrote: “I agree about it should have been privately. Honestly it was something that shot off the top of my head. It was my first time to use the forum. My bad. You know the girl in high school that babbled endlessly all day? That’s me.”

Socially Unconscious radio drama proposal (2003)

In 2003 Wu created a screenplay titled “The Minuete” Which was marked “© Copyright 2003 Election Eve Project.” The author of the Microsoft Word document is listed in the Properties window as “Lauren K. Milovy” and the company listed is “Socially Unconscious Prod.”

Election Eve authors page (2004)

Wu’s autobiography claims that Wu is “an experienced public speaker, and former stand-up comedian” who “spent years working as a D.C. politico/slave.” It continues:

Socially Unconscious (Soccon) was inspired from the wild characters [Wu] encountered while working as a Houseboy for the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. As the author [herself] puts it, “You can’t make these characters up. People ask me where I get my ideas. I tell them, ‘I met them in college.’”

“The thing I love about the Zeta’s,” continues the author, “Is that, honestly? A lot of these girls had big badonkadonk asses. And that had no effect on their partying. In my opinion the size of a girl’s badonkadonk should have no relation to her ability to party.”

The bio for “Milovy” lists the email lmilovy@electioneve.com and suggests the two were in a romantic relationship:

Co-author Lauren Milovy met author [Wu deadname redacted] in 1999 during a disastrous attempt at producing the series in Jackson Mississippi. “[Wu] really hates doing the Adobe Illustrator Work for some reason, the process of turning [Wu’s] hand penciled original drawings into professional inked images.” According to Milovy, when she and [Wu] met, they knew instantly they would be creative partners. “I was reading [her] scripts and I felt like I was reading things that I had written,” says the Co-Author. “We like to joke, I supply the girlpower, [Brianna] supplies the Seinfeld.”

“I’ve been in love enough times to know, you meet someone, figure out you’re better off together than alone, and make compromises until it works. If someone’s written a love story like that, I haven’t read it. I’m proud to be part of producing a story with a romance that’s true.”

Seeking a model to pose as “Milovy” (2004)

In 2004, Wu changed the home page of the Election Eve website to announce a revamp of the site and to solicit a model who could pose as “Milovy.” Wu wrote:

This is just a quick page I threw up. It’s not pretty, but we are currently working revamp this site.

Hi there! This is [deadname redacted]. I am the creator of Socially Unconscious.

Socially Unconscious debuted as a four panel comic strip at the Daily Mississippian in the summer of 1998. Gaining popularity, it was soon syndicated to 11 newspapers. The funds to turn it into a movie soon followed and the SOCCON team spent 2 years and $150,000. The sequel, called Election Eve has been optioned as a novel. That novel is due to be finished in June and Published in November.

My co-writer Lauren Milovy is terribly camera shy, and for the inside photo jacket of the hardcover, she would feel more comfortable having someone else fill in for her. Hence the search for a cover model.

Please email your photo to [deadname redacted]@electioneve.com, and if you do not a .jpg available, please call me, 801.4166, and I will arrange for my assistant to pick them up from you.

Thank you for your interest.
