Mitchell Jackson is an American writer, publicist, and anti-transgender activist best known for being fired from Vice in 2017.
In addition to working for anti-transgender extremists like Candace Owens and Abigail Shrier, Jackson has appeared on anti-trans podcast Blocked and Reported.
Jackson was formerly known as Mitchell Sunderland before getting married.
Background
Mitchell “Mitch” Sunderland was born in 1993 to Judith “Judy” Norford and Peter Sunderland. Mitch Sunderland grew up in Hollywood, Florida in a Catholic family with siblings. Sunderland’s parents divorced around 2002.
Sunderland attended the private American Heritage School, then earned a bachelor’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College in 2014. During and after college, Sunderland wrote for several publications, including Complex, HuffPo (as part of SLCspeaks, “Sarah Lawrence College’s premier online publication”), Thought Catalog, Rookie, Vice, and W magazine.
2017 exposé and firing
In a wide-ranging piece on how Breitbart and Milo Yiannopoulos laundered white nationalism into mainstream media, Joseph Bernstein wrote:
A long-running email group devoted to mocking stories about the social justice internet included, predictably, Yiannopoulos’s friend Ann Coulter, but also Mitchell Sunderland, a senior staff writer at Broadly, Vice’s women’s channel.
“Please mock this fat feminist,” Sunderland wrote to Yiannopoulos in May 2016, along with a link to an article by the New York Times columnist Lindy West, who frequently writes about fat acceptance. And while Sunderland was Broadly’s managing editor, he sent a Broadly video about the Satanic Temple and abortion rights to Tim Gionet with instructions to “do whatever with this on Breitbart. It’s insane.” The next day, Breitbart published an article titled “‘Satanic Temple’ Joins Planned Parenthood in Pro-Abortion Crusade.”
Sunderland was fired the following day. Sunderland wrote a few more pieces under this byline, most notably a story on Stormy Daniels for Penthouse in May 2018.
Name change and pivot to publicity
Sunderland began using the name Mitchell Jackson in 2018 after getting married to J. Corey Jackson. They live in Florida with their pets.
Mitchell Jackson began working in publicity at Judith Regan’s publishing company Regan Arts.
Jackson founded BCC Communications in 2021 and incorporated in Florida in 2022.
