Wilfred Reilly vs. transgender people

Wilfred Reilly is an American political scientist who has published criticisms of reports about anti-transgender violence.

Reilly also believes that the affirmative model of care for gender diverse youth, which is backed by major medical organizations, is “one of the greatest medical scandals of our time.”

Background

Reilly earned a doctorate from Southern Illinois University and a law degree from the University of Illinois College of Law.

Much of Reilly’s work critically examines statistics about bias crimes.

Anti-transgender crime

Reilly stated in anti-trans publication Quillette:

The truth is there is no epidemic of transgender murders. The recorded transgender murder rate is 1/3 or less of the overall murder rate for all American citizens and legal residents.

Reilly failed to note that many violent crimes against transgender people, including murders, do not get reported as such. Transgender victims have been historically misgendered and deadnamed in homicide reports by the police and the press.

Many other kinds of violent crime against trans people, especially robberies and sexual assaults, go unreported because they happened during sex work or because many trans people do not trust the police.

Anti-transgender activism

Reilly was a featured speaker at a 2023 anti-transgender Genspect conference and is an advisor to anti-trans group Foundation Against Intolerance & Racism.
